Massachusetts Environmental Education Plan PDF Print E-mail

The Massachusetts Environmental Education Plan ( MEEP) was a Memorandum of Understanding between the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs ( EOEA) and the Department of Education ( DOE) established in 2000 that charts a course for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of environmental education in the Commonwealth. The plan is broad reaching in that it addresses the entire scope of the EE system in Massachusetts. it does so in four goals:

  1. Develop a statewide environmental literacy program
  2. Include environmental education in Pre K - 12 Curriculum Reform
  3. Encourage pre-service and inservice teachers to develop environmental literacy and the ability to instill environmental literacy in others.
  4. Establish a statewide support and communications system for environmental education

Benchmarks for Enviromental Literacy PDF Print E-mail
In 1993, a committee in SAGEE along with Chuck Roth, developed its environmental literacy benchmarks project. The resulting document articulates benchmarks--  tasks a learners can accomplish based on their comprehension of a body of knowledge, the ability to perform related skills, and use of some basic habits of mind--for grades K-12 that if successfully met will indicate an individual is well prepared to enter society as an environmentally literate person.

The original document is available in print in various places but is hard to find. The original has been scanned and is presented here as text. The text version has little formatting and page references are not valid.

EE Resource Guide PDF Print E-mail

In 2000, SAGEE helped develop Environmental Education Education in Massachusetts: A Resource Guide, the latest in a string of guides affectionately known as "The Green Book." The guide was a directory of organizations that contributed to environmental education in Massachusetts. While this Green Book has seen its finall printing, there is a new and expanded electronic version of the guide being maintained cooperatively by SAGEE, the Massachusetts Environmental Education Society, and the environmental education community. Please check it out to find or offer EE opportunities.
