BOSTON — Wednesday, January 09, 2013 – The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs ( EEA) today announced it is now accepting nominations for its annual Secretary’s Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education until Thursday, March 22, 2013.

EEA Secretary Rick Sullivan will present awards this spring to Massachusetts teachers and students involved in school-based programs that promote environmental and energy education.

“With this program, we recognize teachers and students who inspire their communities by exploring our most challenging environmental and energy issues,” said Secretary Sullivan. “These educators and students work hard each day to learn about adopting clean energy sources, protecting wildlife, recycling and conserving natural resources.”

All public and private Massachusetts schools (K-12) that offer energy and environmental education programs are eligible to apply for the Secretary’s Award. In 2012, Secretary Sullivan recognized schools and nonprofit organizations from 24 communities across the state for their work on issues including recycling, energy conservation, ocean science, wildlife conservation and alternative fuels.

The Secretary’s Advisory Group on Energy and Environmental Education will review applications through mid-April. Qualified entrants are invited to attend a formal award ceremony with Secretary Sullivan at the State House later in the spring.

The Secretary’s Advisory Group on Environmental Education was formed in Massachusetts over two decades ago to advise the Secretary of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs ( EOEA) and the Commissioner of the Department of Education ( DOE) on strategy for the development of environmental education. SAGEE is a statewide organization of professional formal and non-formal environmental educators who function in a variety of capacities in both the public and private sectors. Active members meet quarterly and work with designated EOEA and DOE staff to provide counsel and assistance in implementing a plan for environmental education throughout the Commonwealth.
